WP1 (ATB, ARI): This WP is focused on the design and fabrication of the main body of our implant using additive manufacturing techniques. Extended studies regarding the biomechanics will take place in order to develop models that can predict the behavior of the implant when in vivo.
WP2 (UNIVLEEDS, ICMEA, UoM): The main objective of this WP is the development of a novel diagnostic tool which will help clinicians to check the vitality of the tissues surrounding the implant.
WP3 (AUTH, UoM, UNIVLEEDS): Here the work is focused on the development of the nanomaterials that will be implemented to our implant in order to achieve the “smart” and multifunctional characteristics of the implant. Extensive parametric studies will be conducted in order to optimize the synthesis processes and to develop models that can predict materials properties.
WP4 (UoM, UNIVLEEDS, ATB, AUTH): There are two main objectives in this WP. The first one is to investigate mass transfer in porous structures when the liquid phase is a biological fluid. This study will help us to optimize the design of the implant. The second objective is the development of devices that mimic oral environment and can be utilized for the evaluation of our dental implants before moving to animal trials.
WP5 (AUTH, ARI, UNIVLEEDS): This WP is focused on the in vitro biological evaluation of the biomaterials and on the animal trials for demonstrating the efficacy of the new medical devices. Histological studies will be also conducted in order to determine the regenerative potential and dental tissue attachment on the implant.
WP6 (ICMEA, UNIVLEEDS, ATB, UoM): In this WP we will conduct all the technoeconomic studies for introducing cost as a decision criterion in the overall development of our materials and devices. In the same WP we will develop a realistic business plan for the commercialisation of our implants and for other exploitable technologies developed during I-SMarD.
WP7 (All): This WP is dedicated to stakeholder’s engagement and dissemination activities. Collaboration with the end users (patients, clinicians and manufacturers) during the whole project is critical both to achieve an efficient implant design (taking into account their feedback) but also to create the foundations for clinical and market translation.
WP8 (UNIVLEEDS, all): This WP has the mission of the creative and efficient management of I-SMarD.
